"The outgoing government is emptying the state coffers"/ Hungary's next prime minister makes strong accusations against Orbán: Record deficit at risk
Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Peter Magyar, has accused the outgoing government of Viktor Orbán of aiming to “completely empty the state treasury” in the final days of its mandate.
In a reaction posted on Facebook, Magyar said that a government decision, which he claims to have secured, paves the way for uncontrolled spending and increased public financial commitments.
According to him, “the aim is not only to repay contracted funds, but to create new obligations in the highest possible amount,” adding that controls over procurement procedures have been completely removed.
Magyar also warned that the budget deficit could reach 6.8% of GDP, significantly exceeding the government’s initial targets and revised forecasts.
He called on state institutions and ministries to avoid any new financial commitments and limit spending to the basic functioning of the state.
The outgoing government, on the other hand, has denied the allegations. The prime minister's chief of staff, Gergely Gulyás, stated that the allegations are unfounded, stressing that only previously approved payments were authorized and that the creation of new liabilities after the elections was prohibited.
